# Renting a motorbike in Da Nang: the Vietnamese you need

Rent a scooter, fill it up, fix a flat and park like a local. Here are the words, the questions and a real conversation at the rental shop.

## Before you ride

Rental shops line the streets around An Thượng, Mỹ Khê beach and the city centre. Most offer automatic scooters ( **xe tay ga**) such as the Honda Vision or Air Blade, and semi-automatic bikes ( **xe số**), by the day or by the month. Monthly rentals cost much less per day.

Ride with a valid licence: a Vietnamese licence, or an international driving permit that Vietnam recognises. Wear a helmet on every ride, and keep the bike's papers and your rental agreement with you.

## Phrases you'll use

- **Tôi muốn thuê xe tay ga một tháng.** I'd like to rent a scooter for a month.
- **Giá thuê một ngày bao nhiêu ạ?** How much is it per day?
- **Thuê theo tháng giá bao nhiêu anh?** What's the monthly price?
- **Tiền cọc bao nhiêu ạ?** How much is the deposit?
- **Cho tôi hai mũ bảo hiểm nha.** Two helmets, please.
- **Anh cho tôi xem giấy tờ xe với.** Could I see the bike's papers?
- **Đổ đầy bình giúp tôi.** Fill it up, please.
- **Xe tôi bị bể bánh, tiệm sửa xe gần nhất ở đâu ạ?** I have a flat tyre. Where's the nearest repair shop?
- **Gửi xe ở đâu ạ?** Where can I park?
- **Xe bị hư, anh đến giúp tôi được ạ?** The bike broke down. Could you come and help?

## At the rental shop

**Anh cho thuê xe** the rental shop owner. Example conversation.

1. Chào anh! Tôi muốn thuê xe tay ga một tháng. Hello! I'd like to rent a scooter for a month.
2. Dạ có. Xe Vision một triệu tám một tháng, cọc một triệu. Sure. A Vision is 1.8 million a month, with a one-million deposit.
3. Dạ được. Xe có giấy tờ đầy đủ hả anh? Good. Are the bike's papers all there?
4. Dạ đủ hết. Giấy tờ để trong cốp xe, kèm hai mũ bảo hiểm. All complete. The papers are under the seat, with two helmets.
5. Tôi chụp hình xe trước khi chạy nha anh. I'll take photos of the bike before I ride.
6. Dạ chị cứ chụp. Xe có chuyện gì thì gọi Zalo cho em. Go ahead. If anything comes up with the bike, call me on Zalo.
7. Dạ, cảm ơn anh! Thank you!

## The Da Nang version

Rental shops and mechanics in Da Nang use a few local words. Learn them and every repair stop goes smoothly.

- **cà vẹt** the bike's registration paper: "Cà vẹt xe để mô anh?" (Where's the registration paper?)
- **bể bánh** flat tyre (Central and Southern; the North says thủng lốp)
- **cốp xe** the storage space under the seat
- **chạy êm** runs smoothly: "Xe ni chạy êm lắm." (This bike runs really smoothly.)
- **chừ** = bây giờ, now: "Chừ anh vá liền." (I'll fix the tyre right now.)
- **tê** = kia, over there: "Tiệm sửa xe ở bên tê." (The repair shop is over there.)

## Ride safe and easy

- Wear a fastened helmet on every ride, for you and your passenger.
- Photograph the bike from every side before you ride away, scratches included.
- Test the brakes, lights, horn and mirrors at the shop.
- Keep the bike papers and your rental agreement under the seat.
- Offer a cash deposit or a passport copy, and keep your original passport with you.
- Use paid parking ( **gửi xe**) and keep the ticket until you collect the bike.
