## Where and when to go

At sunrise on Mân Thái beach in Sơn Trà, round basket boats bring the night's catch straight onto the sand, and the beach turns into a market. Thọ Quang fishing port nearby is busy early too. For a calmer morning, the seafood rows at Chợ Hàn, Chợ Cồn and Chợ Bắc Mỹ An sell the same catch a little later.

Go early, between 5:30 and 7:00, for the best choice. Bring cash in small notes. Prices are per kilo, so learn **một ký** and **nửa ký** first.

## The Da Nang version

Market aunties in Da Nang speak warm Central Vietnamese. These words come up at every stall.

- **o** = cô, auntie (Central Vietnam): "Cá ni bao nhiêu rứa o?" (How much is this fish, auntie?)
- **ni** = này, this: "Con ni tươi lắm." (This one is very fresh.)
- **rứa** = vậy, so: "Rẻ rứa o!" (So cheap, auntie!)
- **mô** = đâu, where: "Ghẹ ở mô o?" (Where are the crabs?)
- **tươi rói** super fresh, a favourite market word
- **mấy chục** the price in tens of thousands: "năm chục" = 50,000

## How to spot the freshest catch

- Fish: clear, bright eyes, red gills and firm flesh that springs back.
- Squid: shiny skin with colour spots, and a clean sea smell.
- Prawns and crabs: lively and heavy for their size.
- Shellfish: shells closed tight, or closing when you tap them.
- Ask the seller to clean it ( **làm sạch**); most do it for free while you wait.
- Many seafood restaurants near the markets will cook what you bought for a small fee: ask " **Quán chế biến giùm con được hả chị?**"
